The Place

Welcome to Devonport

The City of Devonport sits on the banks of the Mersey River in the centre of Tasmania’s fertile Mersey/Forth Valley.

Commonly known as “Australia’s market garden” the area produces 40% of Tasmania’s vegetable crop.   As you drive through the region you will see crops of onions, potatoes, peas, carrots and beans.   Other important crops are poppies and pyrethrum.  Significant secondary industries include the processing of agricultural products including vegetables and milk products, production of high quality carpet, pulp and paper and cement manufacture.

Devonport has a stable workforce with a range of skills utilised within industries such as manufacturing, electricity, gas and water, construction, agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, transport and storage, wholesale and retail trades, communication, finance, community services and recreation.

Devonport’s busy port in addition to being home port of the Bass Strait vehicular passenger vessels Spirit of Tasmania I & II  operating daily between Melbourne and Devonport, also caters for roll on/roll off, container and bulk vessels and numerous yachts and pleasure craft moored on the port’s southern boundary.

Devonport has much to offer the visitor with cosmopolitan cuisine and excellent shopping including specialist Tasmanian art and craft shops.    Many a relaxing hour can be spent exploring our history and heritage strolling through the parklands along our picturesque waterfront.    Devonport has over 20 kilometres of cycle/walkways which will take you to local parks, reserves and tourist attractions as well as many excellent locations for picnics.    It’s a great way to see our City.
